The Navigator Series
Wind, moon and stars: one medallion for each way people found their way.
Three pieces, one idea
Before there were satellites there were three ways to know where you were: the direction of the wind, the phase of the moon, and the height of the stars. The Navigator Series is one medallion for each.
I. The Compass Rose
Solid bronze, high relief, antique patina relieved by hand. Thirty-two points around a faceted star, a reeded edge, an edition of 750. Linen pouch and numbered card. $77.
II. The Moon Tide
Sterling silver over a solid bronze core, oxidised dark and polished back by hand. A cratered full moon, its eight phases, and a band of tide. Beaded rim, edition of 500. Hinged velvet case and numbered certificate. $120.
III. The Astrolabe
Two strikes, two metals: a mirror finish fine silver disc and a gold rete that turns on a central pin. Scalloped rim, edition of 250. Solid walnut box, silk lining and a signed certificate. $134.
Struck, not cast
A cast piece is poured into a mould and comes out soft. A struck piece is hit between two engraved steel dies under enormous pressure, which is why the edges of the relief are crisp and the surfaces take a mirror. All three pieces are struck, The Moon Tide twice and The Astrolabe as two separate parts.
Finished by hand
The patina on the bronze and the oxidising on the silver are applied to the whole piece, then the high points are relieved with a cloth by hand so the design stands out of a dark field. It takes a few minutes per piece and no two are perfectly identical.
Collect the three
Order the three together and they arrive with consecutive numbers whenever the editions allow it. There is no bundle price because there is no markup to remove.
