About the piece
Thirty-two points, struck deep enough to read with your thumb.
The compass rose is the oldest drawing on any chart, and the first thing a navigator learned to read. Ours is cut with thirty-two points, the full set of winds, with a faceted star at the center and a ring of graduated marks around the rim. The bronze is darkened in a bath, then the high points are relieved by hand with a cloth, one piece at a time. That is why no two look exactly alike, and why the relief only gets better as it is handled.
